We were driven 40 minutes outside Reykjavik to a ski area which served as the starting point for hike to the volcano. It took about 45 minutes to hike the 3 km up to the base camp where we were outfitted with a harness and helmet.

In groups of 5-6 we were lowered in a window washing basket 120 metres into the volcano where we were able to walk around and explore. They are trying to preserve the volcano in its original state, so there are no paths created inside and walking is difficult over the lava rock. The lights that illuminated the walls are removed at the end of the season so no traces remain.
